Digital watches – digits, no hands

Contrary to what most people think, the term digital watch does not refer to the electronic (quartz) movement, but to the way in which the time is displayed, namely in digits and not with hour and second hands.

The first digital (pocket) watches originated from the 1920s. The mechanical movement contained different types of gears and cylinders with numbers painted on them that clicked into place at the right moment. You just had to hand wind these watches like any other watch from that time.

The very first electronic digital watch did not arrive  on the market until 1972 - 150 years later!; A a derivative  of this watch, the Hamilton Pulsar P1, featured in the James Bond movie Live and let die. The at that time expensive watches quickly gained popularity, and when the Asian manufacturers started to make digital movements en masse and the movements  quickly improved the price plummeted and a hypermodern digital watch was available to everyone.

Nowadays, when we talk about digital watches, the first watches we think of are often the classic Casio watches that we still know from the nineteeneighties. Like the calculator watches that have been engraved in collective memory forever through the film Back to the Future.

Besides Casio there are many other well-known watch brands that make good quality digital watches such as Lorus, Seiko, G-Shock, Pulsar and Timex.

Why buy a digital watch?

The main advantages of a digital watch compared to analog quartz watches and mechanical watches are that a digital watch can often show many more functions in the display in addition to the time. Think of day, date and year, but also location, 24-hour format, etc.

The display of a digital watch is also easy to read and is versatile when the watch also includes a chronograph (stopwatch) and / or other timers and alarms.

Also many (but certainly not all) digital watches, through a built-in calendar function, automatically sets the date of the watch when the previous month had 30 instead of 31 days.

Because digital watches, unlike analog watches, do not have to power complicated clockwork with pointers or date discs, they are often very cheap. Digital watches are already available at Masters In Time from € 24.95. More expensive digital watches are often made of better materials such as stainless steel and titanium. The quality of the (LCD) display and the number of functionalities of the watch also count. For example, a radio controlled digital watch is usually priced a little higher.

Types of digital watches

The majority of digital watches is a quartz watch, so driven by a quartz crystal movement and powered by a replaceable battery. In addition, there are also digital quartz watches with batteries running on solar energy.

Ana-digi watch: analog and digital combined

In addition to 'regular' digital watches, there are many watches that combine both analog (with pointers or hands) and digital (number display) time display. You can find this type of watch in the collections of G-Shock, Sector and Casio. With this type of watch the time is indicated by the hands and for example the day and date digitally.

Smartwatches

Formally (touchscreen) smartwatches are of course no digital watches, but they often have a digital time display. That is why we have also included our touchscreen smartwatches on this page.
