About Timex watches

Timex watchesare among the most popular watches on our sites. Affordable quality and heaps of style in both ladies watches and men’s watches make Timex a watch brand for everyone. Timex is known worldwide and has a longstanding reputation for quality watchmaking and innovation.

The origins of Timex watches

In the fifties of the nineteenth century the Waterbury Clock Company and Waterbury Watch Company were very successful and popular because of their affordable but good quality timepieces and grew into the largest watch manufacturers from the United States. So much so, that the Naugatuk valley region in Connecticut became known as ‘The Switzerland of America’.

The first wristwatch

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the company - in collaboration with marketer Robert Ingersoll - developed  the so-called "Yankee" or "Dollar” pocket watch. The watch actually cost only 1 dollar, making wearing a watch accessible to the masses. A version of this popular pocket watch was converted into a wristwatch during World War I so soldiers could read their watch while handling their weapons. Lugs were welded to the case to which a canvas strap was fastened. The crown was moved to the three o’ clock position and a luminous layer was applied to the numbers on the dial. This was the birth of one of the world’s first wristwatches.

Mickey Mouse watches

During the Great Depression of the nineteen thirties, the company produced clocks and watches under license from Walt Disney. Mickey Mouse cartoons were new and extremely popular. Today, these watches are still produced by watch manufacturer Ingersoll.

Timex watches and WWII

During World War II Waterbury produced precision timepieces for detonators for the US Army. For this work, the company was given an award after which the shareholders decided to call the company the United States Time Corporation. In the 50s, the company was renamed Timex, the name under which they still operate.

Timex Marketing

Ever since the days of Robert Ingersoll Timex has been a company that does a lot of marketing. In the campaigns of the fifties and sixties Timex watches were subjected to unusual testing methods with dishwashers, drills and outboard motors. Their subsequent slogan “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking” instantly became iconic. These campaigns were so successful that by the end of the fifties one out of three watches sold in the US was a Timex watch.

Timex innovations

Timex digital sport watches

The Timex Ironman (Ironman Triathlon) is a digital sports watch was first produced by Timex. Developed in 1986 in collaboration with professional athletes and industrial designers, the Ironman was the first shock resistant digital sports watch equipped with a stopwatch, alarm, backlighting and excellent water resistance. Even today, Timex sports watches are popular with athletes and other professionals such as the military.

Timex Indiglo

Timex Indiglo is a 'backlight' system in which the entire face of a (digital) watch or clock is lit with a push of a button. The name is derived from the word "indigo" since the first generation of watches with this system had  a green/blue luster. Today, more than 75% of the Timex watches are fitted with an Indiglo backlight.

Our Timex watch collection
